The continuous wiped film distillation process has two parts, known as cuts. In the first cut, terpenes are removed from the cannabinoids. In the second cut, lipids, impurities, and solvents are extracted.

Wiped film distillation machines use a continuous feed to send the extracted materials to a heated evaporation vessel, where a rotating blade distributes them onto walls for heating. The materials are then fall down to an evaporation surface. The heat will evaporate material that has lower boiling temperature. There is an internal condenser in the middle of distillation body. Internal condenser was set at temperature that lower than outer surface. Cold surface condense vapor into liquid that is collected at the bottom.

Short path distillation equipment comes with a heated flask through which the material is fed. Heat is gradually applied to the material within the flask, and a vacuum helps draw out vapors to a fractionating tube. The fractioned vapors then go to a condensing tube where each fraction follows a different path to the collection flask.

First cut will remove terpenes and solvent from the rest of material, and second cut will remove THC or CBD from the waste which has higher boiling temperature than cannabis content. THC becomes extremely thick and sticky (similar to honey), while CBD becomes crystallized. At this point in the process, typical methods require the use of solvents to bind with the cannabis extractions. Depending on the size of evaporator surface, wipe film distillation can process ranging from 1 Kg to 50 Kg of crude oil each hour.
